Obituary, Raleigh County, 1895

Mrs. Awry [Ora] Clay was born in Giles Co., Va., Jan. 30,
1812, and departed this life July 17, 1895, aged 83 years,
5 months and 19 days. She was the youngest child of a
family of 24 children and daughter of Ralph and Polly Stew-
art. She has only one brother surviving her, Hon. Chas.
Stewart, Sr., of Wyoming Co. She united with the Methodist
Episcopal Church in 1825 and lived not only a consistent,
but a warm, zealous, practical christian life for 70 years.
“Praise the Lord!” Christianity is no failure with Mother
Clay, it was a practical pay down system.
She was united in marriage with Charles L. Clay in 1828,
he passed away in full triumph of faith some six years ago.
She was the mother of 15 children, ten sons and five
daughters, nine of whom are still living, six have preceded
her to the great beyond.
Farewell, Mother Clay. She lived right and died well.
Let the bells toll, let the curtain fall. Aunt Awry has passed
away from Earth gone beyond the clouds and dwells in that far
away home of the soul. “That land of pure delight where saints
immortal reign.” She’s an angel now, a child of god, a daugh-
ter of resurrection.
Children and Grandchildren of Mother Clay, weep not and
sorrow no more. We can look through a glass (by faith) and
see dimly glimpses of Heavenly glory, and know in part. But
she is seeing face to face, and knowing even as she is also
known. Upon her grave I would drop a tear, and place emblems
of love, purity, and affection symbolizing the pure life she
lived. Awry Clay was a noble woman. Peace to her ashes.

Deposition, Kanawha County, 1902

Extracts from Deposition of W. M. J. Massey
Statements in support of Tempay Cantley’s claim for a Widow’s Pension
Given in Kanawha County, near Fairfield, WV, in December 1902

“I am 52 years of age. My post office address is Fairfield, W. Va. I am a farmer & master[?] & preacher. I lived at Dry Creek, Raleigh County, this state, all my life up to two years ago. Alexander Cantley – we called him Uncle Alec – lived two and a half miles from my home and I worked for him many a day, through several years, and I closed his eyes when he died. He died at the home of James M. Clay, near Dry Creek. I can’t tell in what year he died but he died early in the spring and, I think, in March. I can’t tell in what part of the month, but there was snow.”

“I knew Mr. Cantley’s first wife and we always called her Aunt Polly. I saw her dead and was at her burying. She died not many years before Mr. Cantley and Tempay began to live together or before they were married – I know of this marriage, by hearsay, about the time it occurred. I am not positive I was at this marriage but Tempay says I was there.”

Road Survey, Raleigh County, 1873

September term 1873

Wm H. Shumate, Wm Turner, & Wm Daniel Comrs appointed at the
term of this Court to view out the most practical route for a
road leading from Caperton Right’s smith shop by way of Hamilton
Harper
& others to the intersection of Coal River Road. This day sub-
mitted their report in writing to the effect that on the 16th day of August
1873 they proceeded to make the review finding a proposed route lead-
ing from Hamilton Harper’s passing Jubal Stover’s & John Williams to the
intersection of Coal Road impracticable viewing other routes. Your Comrs
would recommend the location of the road from Caperton Right’s shop
up the Middle Prong of Sand Lick along a road now already partly
made to the upper end of Hamilton Harper’s field above the house
leaving the creek turning to the right hand up a ridge to the
top a main flat ridge & with the same to the intersection of Coal River Road.
